Our journey began with Shadrack Selewane on a winters morning in 2013. At the time, Shadrack was working as a security guard in the same area that Jawbone’s founders, Sven and Jade used to reside in.
What they noticed was when he was not on duty, he would run.
And run.
And run.
And run.
One day the curiosity got the better of them and they approached him to find out why. It was then that he shared his humbling story. “My name is Shadrack Selewane. I grew up in Limpopo but now live in Cosmo City. To run is my passion, I do it for the challenge and love spending time outdoors.”
His daily routine included an 18km run to work, a 12-hour shift and then run an 18km run home.
This routine may seem insurmountable, however, Shadrack did this day in and day out for many years. With a humble, yet confident grin on his face.
At the time, he was a member of the security company’s running club, sadly, in 2014, he was retrenched when a competitor took over the security contract. This left him without a job, a running club or any financial support to pursue his passion of competing in ultra-marathons.
It was at this point that Jawbone made the decision to become his sponsor. Empowering him to continue living his dream.
Shadrack has been unemployed since then and as the saying goes: “Calm oceans don’t make for good sailors”. He has navigated through the adversity and won a silver medal at Comrades 2016.
After the gruelling race was done, he arrived back in Johannesburg and came to visit us at the Jawbone HQ. He walked up to Sven and said; “Sven, here is your silver Comrades Marathon medal. I won it for you.” This gesture stirred emotion with our team and was a testimony to his kind, selfless nature.
“Sven, here is your silver Comrades Marathon medal. I won it for you.”
We are proud to announce that on Sunday, 4 June he will be competing in his 10th Comrades Marathon.
